Yogendra Puranik PhD

Dr. Yogendra Puranik, affectionately known as "Yogi-san," is an Indian-born Japanese politician, education leader, and civil servant who made history as the first person of Indian and Asian origin to be elected to public office in Japan. Born in Ambarnath, Maharashtra, he pursued higher education at the University of Pune, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics, a Master of Arts in Economics, and an Advanced Diploma in Japanese Language before completing a Ph.D. in Sociology. His remarkable journey from India to Japan reflects a lifelong commitment to education, public service, and cross-cultural understanding.

Dr. Puranik has achieved several historic milestones in Japan. In 2019, he was elected to the Edogawa Ward Assembly in Tokyo, becoming Japan's first Indian-origin elected representative. He also became the country's first foreign-origin principal of a public government school and the first Indian-origin gazetted civil services officer. Today, he leads the Education Digital Transformation (Edu-DX) initiative for the Government of Ibaraki Prefecture, driving innovation in public education through technology and digital learning while continuing to advocate for diversity, inclusion, and international collaboration.

A passionate bridge between India and Japan, Dr. Puranik has dedicated more than 25 years to strengthening cultural and educational ties between the two nations. He founded the Edogawa India Culture Center, led community relief efforts following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and spearheaded the installation of Japan's first life-size equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His extraordinary contributions to multiculturalism and social harmony have earned him a place in Japanese high school textbooks. As a member of the Honorary Board of Advisors of the Pune Ideas Festival, Dr. Puranik brings global perspectives on leadership, education, public policy, cultural diplomacy, and international cooperation, enriching the festival's mission to inspire ideas that transcend borders.
